In the second installment of James’ Thin Blue Line series, a Maryland police sergeant is tasked with solving a double murder and apprehending a troubled fugitive. The novel follows Dusty Sampson, a young man from Gaithersburg, Maryland whose life has been marked by abandonment and bad decisions. His father left when Dusty was four, and his mother, Dolores, worked two jobs and dealt with verbally abusive boyfriends. Dusty struggled with attention deficit disorder in school and eventually dropped out, leading to a jail sentence for auto theft.
Despite his mother’s tough love approach, Dusty continues to make poor choices and eventually commits a restaurant robbery, shooting and killing two employees. Enter Sgt. Steve “Mac” MacIntosh, a divorced father and devoted Gaithersburg policeman, who works with his team of investigators to uncover Dusty’s identity and prevent further bloodshed. James’ novel is a somber story that is told in straightforward prose and offers an emotionally resonant narrative. It may resonate with readers who have experienced similar circumstances in their own lives. The book also showcases James’ developing writing skills and her ability to capture the essences of characters in a few pages. Fans of the first book in the series will be pleased to see the return of MacIntosh as he continues to protect Gaithersburg.Check on Walmart Check on Barnes and Noble Check on Powells
