A mercenary is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy in Pote’s thriller. Project Balboa is an international task force attempting to end drug cartel activity. An agent named Owen Webb has been captured and a video surfaces of him being subjected to a violent ritual. Ethan Cain, of the military tech company Pathfinder Survey Systems, is hired to find out what happened to a team of archaeologists who have gone missing in the same region. He is accompanied by Nick Baxter and journalist Lana Foster. The journey is full of danger and they soon find themselves in a difficult situation. They must face shady businessmen, kidnappers, smallpox, Russian mercenaries, and the jungle. Ethan has access to advanced technology to find what he is looking for and discovers evidence of an Aztec civilization, which is strange as the Aztecs were not known to have come so far south. Eventually, they join forces with Project Balboa as Ethan gets closer to understanding what happened to Webb and the archaeologists. Will they make it out of South America alive? The story starts off with a lot of information which can be hard to follow, but once the action begins, it is a thrilling ride. Ethan is an Indiana Jones type, knowledgeable and interested in the ancient society they discover but also able to fight his way out of trouble. Lana is a Bond-girl type—beautiful, often needing rescuing, but also resourceful. This is an exciting story with tight action sequences that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
