Hoia Baciu

Adam embarks on a journey to find his best friend Vlad, who has gone missing in the mysterious Hoia Baciu forest in Transylvania, Romania. Despite warnings from the locals that men have been disappearing from the area on a weekly basis, Adam is determined to find his friend. He is told by the local supreme witch that Vlad is already dead and that Adam will suffer the same fate if he stays. Angelica, the witch’s daughter, decides to help him and introduces him to Carol, a survivor of the Iele.

Carol then invites Adam to look at the Iele that lives in the basement. Iurov’s graphic novel is an exciting work that introduces readers to a Romanian legend and some Romanian language. The full-color illustrations are a captivating contrast to the story, featuring bright colors and scenes during the daytime, which are followed by the darkness of the Hoia Baciu forest and other, more off-putting imagery. Adam is determined to find his friend despite the warnings and risks, and the reader is taken on a thrilling journey with him.
