Rand Brandt, an American forester, discovers he has a special gift that could help preserve the marshlands he loves. On a surveying trip in Wisconsin, he realizes he can make plants grow with his hands. Inspired by John Muir, Rand is determined to put preservation at the forefront of the political agenda, but he is met with bureaucracy and discouragement from his family.

He confides in his lover, Gabriel, and shares the news with his superior, Weston. However, he soon realizes the Forest Service may have other plans for his gift. He and his team are sent to Europe to fight in the Great War, and he is promised a post after the war. This conflict between wanting to do good and being unable to guides Rand’s decisions throughout the book. This story is a compelling exploration of environmental preservation, with detailed plant knowledge that conveys the delicate balance of ecosystems.
