A harrowing story of endurance and bravery that brings attention to a frequently overlooked issue.

By Silvana Marconi ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 14, 2023

Marconi, a survivor of domestic violence, recounts her story in this memoir. She was born and raised in Uruguay, a country where domestic violence was largely ignored or denied. In March 1999, at the age of 21, Marconi went on her first date with Ricardo, the man she refers to as her abuser. He was 24 years old and owned a produce store with his mother, and was very attentive during the early months of their relationship. However, as time went on, he became more distant and his hostility increased. Verbal and emotional abuse soon turned to physical violence, and he demanded she leave their home. One night, he dragged her into the bathroom and threatened her life. It wasn’t until Marconi became pregnant with their second child that she was able to escape the relationship. This English version of Marconi’s story was created by Dr. Giada Biasetti, who provides the book’s introduction, for her Spanish language and translation class. A group of students worked on the translation, each taking on a separate section of the memoir. This may explain the occasional gaps in information and unclear time frames. Nevertheless, the group’s mission to bring a graphic tale of domestic violence to a wider audience is commendable. Through the translation, Marconi is portrayed as a strong woman who has chosen to publicly identify and “denounce” her abuser despite the risk of possible retribution.
