John Bastian, a Californian real estate broker, is in dire straits and decides to take a ski trip with his best friend Kevin. However, an accident on the slopes puts John in a coma for three days. When he wakes up, he has memories that don’t belong to him – they belong to Jack Bachman, a long-dead commercial pilot from Baton Rouge. John is determined to make sense of this potential reincarnation and travels to Louisiana with Kevin to find Jack’s wife, Tammy. It turns out that Jack had ties to a hidden treasure worth more than a billion dollars, and John is determined to find it. This puts him in the crosshairs of a vicious treasure hunter. Bennecke’s novel is full of romance, lost treasure, a murder mystery, and even the supernatural, all of which combine to create an impressive pace. A hurricane headed for Louisiana adds to the tension, and as John gets closer to the gold and to uncovering the person who killed Jack, more villains appear. John is an endearing hero, willing to accept reincarnation despite his Catholic upbringing, and his tendency to act on a whim adds an unpredictable element to the story. The finale is shocking and effective, throwing everything into a tailspin.
